Selecting The Proper Type of Web Hosting

by Max Peykar

When you are launching your website on the internet, an important issue that has to be taken care of is the kind of web hosting service that you will use. The website may have a diverse nature of functions, either as a business website or a personal website. But, they all need to be properly hosted and thus selecting a correct web hosting type becomes vital. Usually there are three types of hosting available with the companies ? free hosting, shared or virtual hosting and dedicated hosting.

Free hosting is the most popular web hosting type among beginners, because it’s the easiest to obtain and maintain. Since beginners are just testing the waters, free hosting can help them learn about building web traffic and other basics to survive in the online world. Family or hobby websites will benefit the most out of free hosting services, because there aren’t many resources to make the site more advanced with time.

There are quite a lot of limitations in free hosting. You can’t select a domain you prefer, because free hosting services are only offered with a sub-domain. Your site name will be something similar to ?http://www.freesiteforme.com/myname/myhobby.? Such site names are difficult to keep in memory and more mistakes are possible when typing the address, so free hosting shouldn’t be used for business sites.

Next, there’s the option of shared or virtual hosting. This web hosting type is quite commonly used for commercial websites and is a very cost effective hosting solution for small and medium scale businesses. You can use your own domain name, with several supporting software offered by the hosting service, such as email accounts, databases, add-on components and web editing options. Technical support is also available for shared web hosting.

The shared or virtual web hosting type, as the name suggests, allows your site to be held in a web server that is already used by thousands of other websites. Here the benefits are great in terms of easy hosting and low price. The disadvantages are that on a shared hosting platform, security becomes less and the bandwidth is restricted too. This is due to the fact that there are several other websites that are using the same resources within the server.

The third option available as a web hosting type is dedicated hosting. Best suited for large websites with major traffic volumes or websites with the necessity to host specialist software, dedicated hosting is very powerful and completely secure. You get the entire server for your website, which naturally makes it the most expensive hosting solution. It also requires better web development and administration skills to update and maintain. If you can afford it, it’s the best hosting solution you can get for your money, as you can host multiple domains and allocate a variety of software resources to each.

An additional web hosting type is also available besides these three ? which is collocated hosting. In this, you put your web server in a particular location which is taken care of by a service provider. It is quite similar to running the website from your home but the only difference is that the physical location of the server is somewhere else. A service provider can offer better services like uninterrupted flow of electricity and an effective web hosting environment with less risks. This is the most expensive kind of specialized web hosting and requires advanced configuration.
