Data Center: Build and Manage IT In House vs. Outsourcing

by Amy Nutt

Too Big for a Small Business As businesses began to increase their focus on having reliable and available data centers, data centers began to grow in size and complexity. No longer a single room housing a comparatively simple computer system, businesses now required very large Internet data centers. These large data centers are expensive to run, expensive to maintain, and expensive to staff.

These huge data facilities were out of the reach of many small businesses. These smaller organizations also needed managed services like high speed Internet connectivity and high availability of data, but they did not have the resources to build such physically large and expense data centers. Even the equipment required for such an endeavor was often out of the financial reach of a small business.

The Adventage of Data Center Outsourcing Private data centers became the go-to solution for small to medium business information technology needs. Data center outsourcing grew in popularity, largely because it was a practical and financially more viable solution to the problems created by huge, on-site data centers.

Not only are outsourced data centers more affordable, they also lift much of the heavy responsibility from the business. Disaster recovery, adhering to industry standards, ensuring a secure and hospitable environment for information storage and management, and many other practical concerns can make in-house data centers a logistical nightmare. When organizations place their trust in an off-site data center, they do not need to shoulder this burden alone.

What to Look For in Outsourcing Data Storage When you outsource your data center responsibilities, you want to be selective in your choice of a data storage partner. Every moment that you network is not up and running, your business is being affected. A high availability data center will place a great deal of emphasis on the following:

- Skilled IT Professionals: A data center is only as good as its staff. Security and networking teams need to be well-trained, skilled, and experienced. Network technicians need to be trained to the highest industry standards. – Proper Environment: The environment of a data center is of the utmost importance. There must be an uninterruptible power supply or backup generator, a highly sensitive HVAC system to filter air, a fire suppression system, and proper installation of equipment. – High Level of Security: Your data needs to be protected, and the first level of defense is the physical security of the building. There should be controlled access, video surveillance, and extensive employee background checks. – Top of the Line Equipment: Network infrastructure is one of the most important aspects of data center planning. When selecting a data center, make sure equipment selection and infrastructure set-up receive the emphasis they deserve. – Strict Adherence to Standards: Industry standards are around for a reason. They help make sure data centers provide high quality service, maximum availability, and top-shelf security measures.

The Advantage of Outsourcing In house data centers simply cannot offer the same kind of reliability and economic viability as off-site data centers. An organization must allow its focus to remain on the health of its business operations, rather than getting bogged down in the details of managing data. Outsourcing your data center allows you to keep your focus where it should be: on your own organization.

The complicated and expensive nature of today’s data center needs make it impractical for a company to expend huge amounts of resources on an in-house data center. It just doesn’t make good financial sense. Instead, outsourcing your data center allows you to put those resources back into your company, further strengthening your organization.

Using Webdesign To Boost Conversion Rates

by Jack Sinclair

Ensure your webdesign experiences great success by discovering powerful ways to improve your coversion rates.

Your first task is to create a navigation system for your website that is easy to understand and consistent.

Amazon.com uses tabs. That is not necessary, as basic underlined text is equally effective. The concept to remember is you need to be intuitive as to what your customers expect from your site and make sure to provide this in a simple format.

For example a webdesign for a site selling replacement printer ink. Put yourself in the position of a customer visiting this website; all you’re looking for is the ink that matches your printer. To that end the navigation system should be designed around choosing the brand and model of printer, that way you can easily find the correct type of ink cartridge you need.

The navigation system should not be extravagant. Vertical or horizontal formats for basic text links are very effective, as are buttons, or organized tabs.

There should be a design and sense conveyed through the look of your website, but this is something that is individual to your website.

One thing to keep in mind with creating the feel of your website is successful sites convery their purpose. So CBS.com should convey NEWS and Disney.com should convey FUN. You may triple your conversion rates by creating the correct feel for your website.

In the same manner that many government buildings appear to be cold and institutional because of the function they perform you must be sure that your websites theme can be recognized right away from the design and layout.

As the saying goes ‘it is the little foxes that spoil the grapes.’ Be careful that the overall appearance of your website is not spoiled by those ‘little foxes’.

What follows are some of the more common webdesign mistakes and how you can avoid them to help your conversion rates increase even more.

a) Avoid using a visible stats counter for your site.

These only serve to show-off how popular your website is and should be kept private. A large number at the bottom of the page showing the number of visitors to your site is going to look pompous and unprofessional.

b) Keep in mind how your site will look when printed. There are a number of people who prefer to print long pages of text and read them from a print out rather than from the screen. Having a ‘printable’ version of the sites pages accommodates such users.

c) Your webdesign should be ‘scannable’.

Many visitors will not immediately read your site. First they will scan the site to make sure it’s worth reading. You can make your site more ‘scannable’ by using bold, colors, underline and headings to emphasize and highlight the main points and subjects of your site.

d) Visitors to your website will first tee the ‘topfold’ of your Homepage before scrolling down. Be sure not to make your header graphics too large or they may take away from the ‘topfold.’ Also, header graphics or company logos that are too large will leave you with less room for the all important text of your site where the major part of your message is contained.

Go out and make your conversion rates skyrocket now, just by applying these webdesign tips.

Finding A Good Ecommerce Hosting Solution Provider

by Manuel Barreda

There are a lot of things to consider when shopping for an ecommerce hosting solution. We need to be certain there is little to no “down time” in the running of the hosting servers, and bandwidth is also an issue if we wish to ensure the servers do not crash from an overabundance of traffic. Other things to keep in mind are domain name registration, how many domains and pages are allowed per account, design quality and capabilities as well as advertizing issues.

When looking for an adequate ecommerce hosting solution, price can be among the first of many things that can come to our minds, and because of this, many seek hosting companies who provide free hosting services. This can have its good points and bad points, but in the end result, we usually find that these just don’t meet our standards for an ecommerce hosting solution.

Domain names and advertising issues can be the largest problems, as these free hosting companies most often give you your own domain name, but with the name of the hosting company inserted into it. Also, they may include banner ads or contextual type ad placements on your site against your will, in order to generate revenue for the hosting company. Both of these down sides can harm the image you wish to project with your website, especially if you create a site for business purposes.

Template designs (the overall layout and look of your site) can be another issue, as they can be very limited. Also, you’ll have to attract traffic to your site, and these hosting companies always leave you off on your own to take on such a time consuming task. Of course, you could choose the speedier method of purchasing pay per click advertizing, which while it may bring quite a lot of visitors to your site within minutes, can cost you quite a hefty price.

It seems that the best ecommerce hosting solution would actually not be free hosting, but a low cost hosting company that can provide simple and easy domain name registration, the registration of multiple domains, unlimited page creation, a versatile yet uncomplicated means of website building, plentiful bandwidth, advertisement free (unless monetized advertising is placed by you at your sole discretion), and a speedy and uncomplicated means of generating sizeable volumes of targeted traffic at no advertizing cost.
